Double Cardan Shafts

GEWES has produced double cardan shafts for powered, steered axles in the medium and heavy application range for more than 50 years.

This experience has led to the development of proven designs characterised by:

  • Large deflection angles up to 52 degrees and compact designs due to journal crosses with axle offset
  • High torque capacity
  • Long service life due to the rolled profiles of the shafts
  • Use of high-quality, tempered steel types with optimised heat treatment
  • Thin-walled bearing bushes with optimised bushing base rigidity are used for maintenance-free swing bearings

Important Note

The correct design calculation of double universal joint shafts requires expertise and great experience. The specified parameters should be considered to show reference values. The actual values of these may vary, depending on your specific application.  Hence, we strongly urge a consultation by our experts of the design department, who gladly will give you the necessary advise.

Here you will find some more useful information.

Arrangement of double cardan shafts

Double cardan shafts for front-wheel drives of vehicles must be chosen carefully to ensure that the maximum transferable peak torques are not exceeded by the maximum permitted weight and optimal tyre adhesion. The specific application determines whether any differential gear locks may be ignored.

The permanent torque is important for the design of applications involving continuous drives. Please note that the transferable torque decreases with an increasing deflection angle of the double universal joint (see Figure 1).

Double cardan shafts without joint centring

Versions without joint centring, which are particularly used for steered, fixed axles, require static support of both connecting shafts in a radial direction. One of the connecting shafts must be axially fixed, while the other one must be allowed to slide at least by IV (see Figure 2).

The rotation point S should be shifted towards the side of the axially mobile shaft. Accurate specification of the value can be determined in a discussion based on the design programmes offered by our company. It must be considered that one of the two connected yokes must be able to slide.

Safety recommendations

Rotating Cardan shafts may pose risks!

The legal safety regulations must be adhered to by the user or operator and appropriate safety measures must be taken, e.g. catch brackets, covers etc. (adhere to EC machine directive).

The drive must be in a resting position when work is performed on the drive shafts. Installation, removal, repair and maintenance may only be performed by specialist staff. Tilting parts and yokes must be taken into account during installation and removal, as must transporting double cardan shafts. There is a risk of injury!

General Information

The regulations for installation and initial operation must be strictly adhered to.

The permitted operating data may not be exceeded (Md, β, n). No steam jets or high-pressure cleaners may be used for cleaning these areas to prevent damage to the swing bearings and seals.

Storage of Double Cardan shafts

These must be stored in dry, closed rooms on suitable frames with the shafts lying next to each other. The profiles and bearing seats of the shafts must be protected against damage.

Damage due to inappropriate handling and/or storage can invalidate the legal warranty and any associated claims.
